The Regenerate Napkin Sketch

Thursday, May 13th, 2010
by Stacey McMahan

Plain Green 10 was a kick. Now we’re sifting through all the bytes of information needing organization and wrap-up, and the headless snowman napkin sketch I woefully described during the “good morning welcome” has emerged. Had we been able to bring this simple diagram up on the screen, it would have illustrated our intent and mission for the day.

It was a quick illustration by Brian Dunbar from the Opening Party the night before. Brian was explaining three very different places in the way we design our world.

Degenerate. The bottom of the illustration is where most of us reside, and usually design if that is our profession, and if we’re being honest.

Sustain. The middle is really a misnomer, but worthy target.

Regenerate. At the top is what the future holds for those who truly dream, stretch and look long into the future when designing and making our world.

The ‘belly button,’ by the way, is where Brian sees green building these days.

Communicating Green with Nathan Schock

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Nathan Schock hosted a breakout session at Plain Green 10 on how to communicate a green message for your business. He should know, he’s the Public Relations director for POET, one of the very best in the world at sharing their sustainability message. (Full disclosure: POET also happens to be a sponsor of the Plain Green Conference, which doesn’t change how great we think they’re doing with their branding.)

Nathan is also a communications ninja. He’s a prolific blogger and tweeter, and posted his slideshow online prior to his talk, asking his Twitter followers who could not be there to submit questions that he would answer during the session. Now, he’s posted his slides, with real time audio from his talk, on Slideshare.

Enjoy.

Local Sustainability Showcase Added

Monday, April 19th, 2010

As you know by now, this year we really swung for the fences with our keynote speakers, bringing in sustainability design stars like Cameron Sinclair, Mitchell Joachim, Randall Arendt, Brian Dunbar and Steve Clark. We also created more opportunities to learn and share with local people changing our part of the world by creating 10 breakout sessions at this year’s Conference, and expanding the Marketplace to include over 30 companies reshaping our communities. Check out the full schedule here, and the list of exhibitors here.

Now, we’re adding a full hour showcasing some amazing stuff of our own–sustainability projects right here in our own neighborhood. Thursday afternoon will now feature the Local Sustainability Showcase, where you’ll hear from a group of volunteers who are building a strawbale shed to help rejuvinate a Sioux Falls neighborhood, a college environmental club that is launching the region’s first large-scale cafeteria composting project, and the latest on how a local health system is building a ground-breaking cancer hospital that’s a model for sustainable healthcare anywhere.

Look for these presentations on Thursday afternoon at 2:20.

Local Sustainability Showcase

  • Whitney Parks of Architecture for Humanity Sioux Falls on Community Service Project 2010: Building a Strawbale Tool Library
  • Kayla Miller of SDSU Sierra Club on Composting in the Cafeteria
