A new standard has been introduced for the design of high performance green buildings in an effort to provide minimum requirements for green building practices. We’ve just added a special presentation at the Plain Green Conference and Marketplace to introduce and highlight this standard and include helpful information for those who strive to design, build, and operate green buildings.
As the first code-intended commercial green building standard in the United States, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE) Standard 189.1 is developed in model-code language and applies to all buildings except low-rise residential buildings.
Presenter Doug Zentz is Program Coordinator of HVACR Department for College of Engineering Technology at Ferris State University. Zentz has been a speaker at ASHRAE, ARI, MEAC, and Lily workshops around the country on HVAC system fundamentals, advanced HVAC concepts, GREEN Buildings and educational experiences.
From ASHRAE.org/GreenStandard: “Standard 189.1 provides a “total building sustainability package” for those who strive to design, build and operate green buildings. From site location to energy use to recycling, this standard sets the foundation for green buildings by addressing site sustainability, water use efficiency, energy ef¬ficiency, indoor environmental quality, and the building’s impact on the atmosphere, materials and resources. Standard 189.1 serves as a jurisdictional compliance option to the Public Version 1.0 of the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) published by the International Code Council. The IgCC regulates construction of new and remodeled commercial buildings.”
